Every Great Expedition Needs a Mission
Children don’t need much encouragement to turn a birthday party into an adventure. Give them a few dinosaur decorations, some footprints on the floor and a mysterious-looking map, and suddenly the living room has become an unexplored prehistoric jungle.
That’s one of the reasons dinosaur themes work so well. They aren’t limited to a particular character or film. Dinosaurs provide an entire world to play with, from discovering fossils and tracking footprints to escaping an imaginary T-Rex.
A Dinosaur birthday party can therefore become much more than a collection of dinosaur-shaped decorations.
Turn the Guests Into Explorers
Rather than simply telling children that the party has a dinosaur theme, give them something to investigate. A basic treasure hunt can become a fossil hunt, with small clues hidden around the garden or party room.
You don’t need authentic fossils or expensive props, either. Painted stones, toy bones or pieces of homemade salt dough can all become part of the search. The children aren’t going to inspect them under a microscope; they’re going to be far too busy arguing about who found the biggest one.
Dinosaurs Make Excellent Party Games
The prehistoric world also provides plenty of inspiration for games. Children can pretend to move like different dinosaurs, follow a trail of footprints or attempt to sneak past an imaginary predator.
Even familiar party games can be given a dinosaur makeover. Musical statues becomes a competition to freeze like a dinosaur, while a simple relay race can become an expedition across dangerous prehistoric terrain.
The theme doesn’t need to dictate complicated rules. Sometimes changing the story surrounding an ordinary game is enough to make it feel completely new.
Create a Prehistoric Setting
Decorations don’t have to be elaborate to make a difference. Green streamers can become jungle vines, cardboard boxes can become rocks or caves, and paper footprints can lead guests towards the main party area.
A few dinosaur toys placed around the room can help complete the scene. If there’s outdoor space available, that’s even better. A garden can quickly become an unexplored island with a little imagination.
There’s something particularly satisfying about decorations that can double as part of the entertainment rather than simply sitting there looking pretty.
Don’t Forget the Quiet Moments
With all the roaring, running and imaginary dinosaur attacks, it’s easy to imagine the party becoming one continuous burst of noise. Children eventually need a breather, though.
A dinosaur-themed craft can provide a useful change of pace. Guests could decorate their own dinosaur, make a paper fossil or create an explorer badge to take home.
These quieter activities are particularly useful for children who aren’t interested in racing around the garden. Not everyone wants to spend an afternoon pretending to be chased by a Tyrannosaurus.
The Cake Can Become Part of the Adventure
Birthday cakes are already a natural centrepiece, so there’s no need to overcomplicate the rest of the food. A dinosaur cake, footprints made from icing or simple green and brown decorations can tie everything together.
You could even make the cake part of the imaginary expedition. Perhaps the children have finally discovered the legendary dinosaur nest — although in this case, the eggs are considerably more delicious than anything a palaeontologist would normally find.
Let the Children Make the Story
Perhaps the best thing about dinosaurs is that there isn’t one strict story everyone has to follow. Children can invent their own.
One minute they’re scientists searching for fossils, the next they’re dinosaur trainers, explorers or survivors escaping a volcanic eruption. Adults don’t necessarily need to direct every part of it.
Give children a starting point and they’ll often take the story somewhere you hadn’t considered.
A Party Can Be an Adventure Without Being Complicated
The appeal of a dinosaur theme isn’t really about buying the perfect decorations. It’s about giving children permission to imagine something much bigger than the room they’re standing in.
With a few props, some simple games and an adventurous story, an ordinary birthday can become an expedition into a prehistoric world. And when the children go home covered in cake crumbs and still arguing about which dinosaur would win in a fight, you can probably consider the expedition a success.
